The Vampire Chronicles alone is a terrible mess of really, really problematic shit and Armand's past plays a huge role in it. His past includes a lot of CSA as well as cults and some extreme violence that Armand himself is not too above to partake in if the mood hits him. Armand does not like to talk about his past to people and so he would rarely mention it but all of this really colors his character.
